Can I get a massage while Pregnant?

Greensburg Massage Therapists

November 28, 2016

Absolutely! A Pregnancy Massage is a wonderful way to celebrate your pregnancy, practice self-love during a life changing time, and create a bonding experience with your baby.

As a Mama to 5 little ones, trust me when I say that I understand what your body is going through right now. It would be hard to catalog the myriad of changes that are taking place, not only physically but emotionally as well.

I recommend that you consult a Pregnancy Massage Specialist during your first trimester. Around 10-12 weeks is the perfect time to begin Pregnancy Massage Therapy. If you are having any issues with your pregnancy, you will want to discuss this with your therapist DURING scheduling. It may be necessary to bring a release form from your doctor. Your massage therapist should offer to provide this form.

One of the most important things to consider when scheduling Pregnancy Massage is the safety of not only you but your baby as well. Is the therapist well-trained? Your therapist should have advanced training AND experience in Pregnancy Massage. Additionally, he/she should be well versed in the common complaints that arise during Pregnancy.

One other issue that I must address is bolstering. Obviously, you will not be lying in a prone (face down ) position during your session. You may see special pillows or tables with "cut-outs" that would place you face-down for a session. I do NOT recommend this. In my 15 years of experience offering specialty Pregnancy Massage, I do not believe that there is enough evidence to 100% support the safe use of these devices. In my studio, I utilize a bolstering system that will keep you comfortable AND safe at all times.

Finally, you can receive massage as frequently as you like during pregnancy. As a general rule of thumb, I recommend clients begin with once every 3-4 weeks in the first trimester and slowly increase the frequency as the pregnancy progresses. I have many pregnant clients who will receive massage once a week in the 3rd trimester. This is not only healthy but safe as well.

Congratulations! Enjoy every moment of this special journey and don't forget to schedule a Postpartum Massage once the baby has arrived!

Should I get my abdomen massaged?

Greensburg Massage Therapists

November 28, 2016

I must admit that I may be a bit biased when asked this question. When I first started massage school 15 years ago, we covered abdominal massage but there wasn't much emphasis placed on massaging the abdomen. Once I graduated, I didn't even suggest that clients receive abdominal massage. Put simply, I just didn't "get it."

Fast forward a couple of years after I was licensed, I met an AMAZING massage therapist and she suggested an abdominal massage. I started to say, no thanks, but she stopped me and explained some amazing benefits:

~Improved Immune Function (70-80 % of your immune system is localized in your gut)

~Relaxation

~Decrease in Constipation

~Toning of the abdominal muscle

~Decrease in LOW Back Pain (yep, you read that correctly-there are muscles that contribute to low back pain that are actually accessed more readily through the abdomen than the back)

She went on to further explain that the abdomen is an emotional "center" where emotions and past experiences are held. She explained that abdominal massage is not only physically beneficial, but emotionally as well.

Needless to say, I agreed to the abdominal massage. It was a game-changer for me. For starters, she was experienced in abdominal massage. It felt amazing and to this day, abdominal massage remains one of my absolute favorite areas to have massaged.

Although I see many clients who shy away from abdominal massage, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Personally, I like to add a hand-crafted aromatherapy blend to the experience and create an amazing experience.

Definitely consider saying, yes to abdominal massage during your next session. You won't regret it!

Deep Pressure vs Deep Tissue Massage

Greensburg Massage Therapists

November 28, 2016

What is the difference between Deep Tissue Massage and Deep Pressure Massage? Although many people use the terms interchangeably (including some massage therapists!), Deep Tissue Massage is NOT the same thing as Deep Pressure Massage.

Depending on modality (type of massage), most massage sessions can include Deep Pressure. A perfect example of applying deep pressure would be during a Swedish Massage. With the traditional long, gliding strokes of Swedish Massage, the therapist can simply apply more pressure (force) to deliver a deep pressure session. A deep pressure massage is frequently offered to the entire body, is experienced as deeply relaxing, and typically is not uncomfortable in any way.

Deep Tissue Massage, on the other hand, is a separate modality of it's own. A therapist who is offering Deep Tissue Massage will be offering a set of strokes that are designed to address and access the deeper muscle layers. A therapist offering true Deep Tissue Massage has received advanced training in this technique.

Deep Tissue Massage is frequently offered in an area of concern vs. being offered to the entire body in one session. Although it is not the goal of ANY massage to be painful, Deep Tissue Massage may uncover some tender areas. It is important to offer feedback to your therapist during your session. Deep Tissue Massage is goal oriented and your therapist will discuss your goals and make recommendations on how frequently you will want to receive a session to obtain the maximum benefits.

Although both can be enjoyable, it is important to verify your therapist's training to be assured that your goals for your massage session are met.  It is also important to ensure your safe enjoyment of services to clarify the level of training that your therapist has had and determine if he or she is offering Deep Pressure Massage or Deep Tissue Massage.

What is Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy?

Greensburg Massage Therapists

December 5,2016

Ashiatsu literally means "Ashi" (foot) Atsu (pressure)

An Ashiatsu therapist will massage the body with their feet while keeping their balance with a well-placed set of bars secured to the ceiling over the table.

Ashiatsu has been termed, "the deepest, most luxurious massage in the world," for it's ability to go deeper than is possible with your typical deep tissue massage. Despite the depth of pressure, the massage remains smooth and fluid, creating an unbelievably luxurious feeling to the recipient.

During an Ashiatsu session, the therapist does not "stand on your back" nor walk on your back in the traditional sense of the word. Although an Ashi therapist makes the techniques look easy, they are, in fact, highly trained in performing each stroke safely.

Feedback is an invaluable part of an Ashi session and allows the therapist and the client to communicate effectively so that the session goals are met.

Ashiatsu would be a great choice for someone who enjoys Deep Tissue Massage (Ashiatsu has sometimes been referred to as a Deep Tissue Massage on steroids.) It is an ideal deep massage choice for someone who is experiencing low back pain, upper or mid back pain, headaches, and chronic tension and anxiety. It is also a great massage for stress relief, as the deep techniques allow for total body relaxation.

Schedule your Ashiatsu session today and see what all the buzz is about! Once you go Ashi, you'll never go back to Deep Tissue Massage.

Should my massage hurt?

Greensburg Massage Therapists

December 12, 2016

In a word, no. In two words, absolutely not!

"No pain, no gain" is not applicable to a massage session.

Unfortunately, some guests have had experiences with Deep massage in the past that was quite painful. Worse yet, they may have even been told that this pain was beneficial and were promised great relief if they only endured through the session.

In 15 years of practice, I believe that the human body, like so many other things in life, responds well to patience, kindness, love, attention, and true listening.

In my opinion, it is never appropriate to force the body to do anything. When the body is "attacked" with aggressive techniques, the first response will always be immediate resistance in the form of tensing the muscles and bracing yourself for the onslaught of pain.

In our fast-paced society, it is common to have guests request or demand, immediate results. Unfortunately, your body has developed habits over YEARS of living. Oftentimes, it will not be fixed in one session.

I encourage each guest to stop. Breathe. Listen to your body. What is it trying to tell you? Is it hurting? Is it aching? Moving slowly? Creaking? How can you love and honor your body today? Good nutrition, adequate rest, daily movement, and quality bodywork are a great place to start. Honor yourself. You are totally worth it!

"Busy or BS?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

January 30, 2017

Once upon a time, it was commonplace when an acquaintance asked, "How are you?" to automatically answer, "Fine," but these days, there is a new kid on the block and it is called "busy."

"How's it going?"

"Busy!" is more often than not the response these days. "Busy" has become the new fine. It rolls off the tongue like a badge of honor.

Technology has shortened our attention span. As we dash from one activity to another, our attention has shortened and yet the distance between our mind and body has become further apart.

As the distance between our mind-body connection widens, we respond by getting busier. AS the symptoms of "busy" begin to creep in...back pain, headaches, digestive upset, and more, we strive to mask the effects so that we can stay "busy." In fact, we keep getting busier.

The solution is to do less. Put down the technology.  Breathe. Rest. Get a massage. Take a moment and reconnect with you.

"Headaches...what can you do?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

January 31, 2017

According to "Medical News Today, " :

"Primary headaches are stand-alone illnesses caused directly by the over-activity of, or problems with, structures in the head that are pain-sensitive. This includes the blood vessels, muscles, and nerves of the head and neck. They may also result from changes in chemical activity in the brain."

Okay, so what is really going on? Let's take a look at some of the most common culprits when it comes to TENSION HEADACHES and talk about what you can do to relieve the pain associated with headaches.

No one likes a pain in the neck, literally! Much less a headache. Tension headaches are a common reason to seek out a massage therapist. The nagging, chronic ache has just become too much and you know that you need to take action.

Today, an increasing number of people are spending way too much time SITTING.  According to the Mayo Clinic:

"The increased risk was separate from other traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as smoking or high blood pressure. Sitting in front of the TV isn't the only concern. Any extended sitting — such as behind a desk at work or behind the wheel — can be harmful."

What if your job requires a lot of sitting? Consider the following actions that can make a huge difference:

~A Standing Desk

~Take frequent breaks to stretch your neck and shoulders (examples here: http://www.self.com/gallery/stretches-relieve-sore-neck-sitting-all-day)

~Practice Yoga

~Receive regular massage sessions to address neck, shoulder, and back issues

~Take breaks throughout the day to walk around

~Get moving ! When you aren't at work, try to spend time moving around rather than sitting

~Meditate

~Float

Life is busy, there is no doubt about that. But you deserve to feel good. When your body is in pain and begins hurting, it is crying out for some TLC. Take a moment today and LOVE YOURSELF!

"Massage takes away the stress....and so much more"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

January 31, 2017

Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to stress I go.

Life has become pretty damn stressful. How did that happen? First, let's take a look at the different types of stress and how it may be effecting your health.

A certain amount of stress is normal and can even be positive. It motivates us to be successful, to complete projects, and to grow, both personally and professionally.

But what happens when you experience a high level of stress WITHOUT the accompanying down time that follows a stressful event. Well, this is when stress becomes chronic.

Chronic stress has been linked to back pain, headaches, anxiety, depression, and digestive disorders. Worse yet, stress can contribute to the severity of the following: heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.

Why are we so stressed and what can we do about it?

Today, we are bombarded with stimulation in all directions. Working, taking care of kids (or parents), shuffling around from one activity to another, and constantly surrounded by a busy digital world.

It is important to take the time (I know it's hard) for YOU. Take a moment and set aside 20 minutes a day to do nothing. It isn't lazy or unproductive. In fact, it may be the best thing you do to increase your productivity. If 20 minutes sounds like a leap, then start with 5 minutes and gradually build up to 20 minutes.

At the end of the day, what are your priorities? What really matters? Sure, things need to be done and life has become a busy place. You matter.

Breathe.

"Massage Cupping for Back Pain"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

February 2, 2017

Since the Summer Olympics 2016, there has been quite a buzz surrounding the mysterious circular marks seen on athletes such as Michael Phelps. Was he injured? Was this some strange, barbaric ritual used to give him the competitive edge? It was Massage Cupping.

Massage Cupping has been around for thousands of years and utilized by multiple cultures as a way to promote health and healing.

So, what is massage cupping?

Massage Cupping is a form of vacuum therapy which creates an area of localized suction on the skin. The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system which creates deep relaxation. Cupping may be used to relieve back and neck pains, alleviate stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, and more.

During a massage cupping session, the therapist may opt to place the cups (static cupping) or may choose to massage with the cups (moving cupping.) A trained Cupping Therapist will know what to is most appropriate for you and your needs.

Benefits of Massage Cupping:

1-Reduce Pain

2-Promotes Relaxation

3-Boosts Skin Health

4-Reduces Scar Tissue

5-Improves Digestion

"What happens during a Couples Massage?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

February 7, 2017

Couples Massage is one of the services that Super Spa Girl has become known for.

In our Greensburg massage studio, we have a Couples Massage Suite that allows for 2 tables to fit comfortably so that you can receive massage with your wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend, partner, mother/daughter or simply friends sharing a girls day out.

During a Couples Massage, there are some similarities to a single massage: you will both relax on cozy massage tables with table warmers and you will both receive an amazing massage session with oils of your choice.

During the session, you are free to talk to remain silent and simply enjoy being in each other's presence. Your therapists will not speak unless they are communicating with you regarding your session. This allows the time to be reserved solely for you both, to remain focused on what the session is about: YOU.

At our Greensburg Studio Couples Suite, we light candles and dim the lights so that you can both experience deep relaxation. Oils are chosen based on your preferences.

At the conclusion of your session, you will enjoy warm towels placed on your back. Your therapists will gently exit the room and allow you time to relax for a few minutes.

Overall, the experience is one of deep relaxation and peace.

Couples Massage is perfect for an anniversary or a date night. It is also an ideal gift for a special holiday, like Valentine's Day or a birthday. We have couples who enjoy Couples Massage in preparation for upcoming nuptials (after many long months of planning, it's the perfect way to relax.)

"Is Pregnancy Massage Safe?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

February 6, 2017

Okay, you POAS (peed on a stick) and it was POSITIVE! Now, the first thing on your mind is scheduling your first Pregnancy Massage! Okay, maybe not the FIRST thing.

Whether you are expecting your first baby or you're a seasoned pro at this pregnancy thing, one thing is for certain, no two pregnancies are alike and no two pregnant women are alike.

That said, there does seem to be some common complaints that most pregnant women do experience: round ligament pain, low back pain, moods swings, fluid retention, achy joints. You may have one, none, or all of the above. It's all completely normal.

Pregnancy massage is an amazing way to nurture yourself and your unborn child during this miraculous time of your life. Maybe you have been planning this for awhile or perhaps it was the best surprise of your life. Either way, it's a unique and powerful journey.

When considering a Pregnancy Massage, be sure to look for a Pregnancy Massage Specialist. A Pregnancy Massage Specialist has advanced training in Pregnancy Massage, and can also offer pregnancy knowledge. Beware of massage therapists who offer Pregnancy Massage yet have little to no training beyond what was offered in a basic massage school program.

Remember, your safety and the safety of your baby is the number one priority. Add to that, your therapist should truly know what the common concerns of pregnancy are and how to safely address those concerns.

As a Pregnancy Massage Specialist with 15 and a half years of experience AND a mother to 5 children, I have found that the safest way to receive Pregnancy Massage is face-up with props and side-lying. I know that there are specialized pillows and tables on the market today with special cut-outs (where your belly would go with you lying face-down.) In my personal and professional opinion, I do not believe that there is adequate research or evidence to fully support the safety of such tables 100% and thus, I cannot recommend or utilize them in my massage studio.

As a Pregnancy Massage Specialist, I have invested in the best bolstering systems for your safety and the safety of your baby.

Once the excitement of discovery settles in and you are ready to get started, take a moment and schedule your first Pregnancy Massage session. For optimal results, a healthier and stress-free pregnancy, I recommend one of our Pregnancy Massage Packages which guides you through your 9 month journey to a safe and healthy delivery.

"How often should I get a Pregnancy Massage?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

February 8, 2017

Congratulations, you are expecting a baby!

Once the excitement settles in and you are ready to schedule your first Pregnancy Massage, you will naturally want to know how often should you receive a Pregnancy Massage? How often CAN you safely receive a massage?

I recommend that all newly expectant Moms-To-Be schedule their first Pregnancy Massage towards the end of the first trimester (8-10 weeks is ideal.)

During that session, your Pregnancy Massage Specialist can make recommendations for you to guide you throughout your 9 month journey. As a general guideline, I recommend the following:

First Trimester: Pregnancy Massage once per month

Second Trimester: Pregnancy Massage every 2-4 weeks

Third Trimester: Pregnancy Massage every 1-2 weeks

Clearly, this is not set in stone, it is merely a guideline to give you an idea of what is optimal. Studies have shown that regular Pregnancy Massage leads to a healthier, less stressful Pregnancy and can also promote a healthier labor.

For your convenience, Super Spa Girl offers Pregnancy Massage Packages with our Pregnancy Massage Specialists that you can enjoy throughout your pregnancy.

Feel free to ask questions. Our Pregnancy Massage Specialists are able to accommodate a variety of special concerns and needs related to your Pregnancy Massage experience.

"WOW-I didn't know that was even sore until my massage-what's going on?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

February 22, 2017

First time guests (ande even some seasoned massage-goers) often find themselves surprised that a certain area of their body is sore or bothering them. It didn't feel sore but now it is noticeably so.

What's going on?

Throughout your busy day, as you go about your busy life, you are consistently presented with stimulation:

~People talking

~Phones ringing

~Cellphones buzzing

~Angry bosses

~Road Rage

~Worry

~And, oh so many responsibilities!

Is it any wonder that throughout each and every day, you are so stimulated from outside sources that you rarely have spent time in solitude with your body. Chronic stimulation can escalate to the point that you are responding to your body mindlessly. Sure, it might ache a bit but there's things to do! Gotta keep moving!

Massage Therapy allows you to slow down and experience your body in a different way-not mindlessly but MINDFULLY. Massage Therapy allows you to be fully present. Quiet. Still.

Without the constant stimulation, you slowly become aware of your body and feel what your body has been trying to tell you-hey, I need attention. I am tired. I am sore. I have needs. Slow down and take care of me.

Regular massage therapy is the key to reconnecting with your body so that you can experience yourself in a new way. Not only is this good for you physically, but mentally and emotionally.

It may be time to slow down and consider yourself for a moment. It's okay to feel things deeply and slowly. Simply let awareness wash through you and awaken you to the power within your body.

"Fertility Massage-come on! Are you seriously claiming that a massage can get me pregnant??" Greensburg Fertility Massage Therapist

March 5, 2017

About 7 years ago, I first heard of Fertility Massage. As a Pregnancy Massage Therapist and a mother of (then 3 children), I was intrigued by the idea of a "Fertility Massage."

Almost immediately following that thought was a whole lot of skepticism. I mean, really, what a scam, what are they trying to sell these women?

Another couple of years past and I heard about Fertility Massage again. Rather than dismissing it, I decided to investigate further. What WAS a Fertility Massage?

As I looked into Fertility Massage, I discovered some amazing things. First of all, a Fertility Massage Therapist does not make any claims about "getting clients pregnant." Fertility Massage Therapists help you have the healthiest body possible so that conception can occur.

During an initial Fertility Massage, your therapist will spend 30-minutes to an hour discussing your Fertility Journey and your general health. Nutrition, lifestyle, charting, and holistic options may be on the menu to discuss.

Although the massage is an important component of the first visit, it is by no means all inclusive.

In my private practice, I have had Fertility clients tell me that it was worth the experience-even if they did NOT get pregnant. Those are pretty powerful words from someone who has been trying to conceive for years.

Other guests walked away with a handful of resources to explore what their holistic options were-things their doctor had never mentioned.

Still others left with a newfound understanding of how their body works. The Fertility Massage experience, for them, was an opportunity to break the silence surrounding their divine womanhood and unlock the secrets of what is really going on.

As a Fertility Massage Therapist, a Fertility Coach, and the founder of The Fertility Reset Method, I can assure you that a Fertility session is much more than a relaxation massage. It is no way meant to take the place of traditional medical advice but it can add a wealth of information to your arsenal and put you that much closer to your dream of motherhood.

Happy Babymaking!

"Does Massage Cupping hurt?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

March 7, 2017

During the Summer 2016 Olympics, Massage Cupping was center stage as an oddity and a curiosity. What were those strange, round marks on the athletes and why would anyone do that to themselves? Was the cost of winning really worth the pain?

As these questions arose, I had to chuckle a bit. Massage Cupping is an ancient technique, taken from TCM (Traditional Chinese Medecine.)

Not only does Massage Cupping NOT hurt, but many guests find that it provides faster pain relief than a traditional massage such as Deep Tissue Massage and Trigger Point Therapy.

In addition, Massage Cupping is not guaranteed to leave the telltale marks. It is possible to have a cupping session and be mark-free. Even if marks do occur, they will fade within a day or so.

In summary, as with any massage session, "no pain, no gain" is not the theme of the day. Massage Cupping is a safe, effective treatment for alleviating muscular pain.

"What is the fastest way to get rid of back pain?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

March 8, 2017

Back pain can be caused by a variety of things. Almost always, back pain is going to fall under the umbrella of "Stress."

When you think of stress, frequently you are thinking of mental or emotional stress. While those may also be causing pain, physical stress is often the culprit.

Desk jobs, lack of movement, repetitive movements are all hidden causes of back pain.

In the business of our days and lives, it is easy to overlook a small pain here and there. Unfortunately, this leads to greater problems and greater pain. It may escalate until it is no longer able to be hidden and that is when you will experience disruptive pain.

Disruptive pain interferes with your ability to sleep, enjoy your hobbies and work effectively. An acute episode can last for weeks and leave you desperate for answers.

Deep tissue massage, Massage Cupping, and Ashiatsu are all effective means of releasing the deep muscle pain that can be associated with back pain, headaches, and more.

Regular massage can not only treat back pain but it can prevent back pain as well. It is much easier to circumvent pain than it is to deal with it once it has arrived.

Discuss with your massage therapist the type of back pain that you are experiencing so that she can make recommendations on the best massage for you.

"What happens during an Ashiatsu Session?"

Greensburg Massage Therapists

March 10, 2017

Ashiatsu, which literally translates to mean "Foot Pressure," is a type of barefoot massage technique.

During the session, you will be asked to begin your session face down while relaxing on a comfortable, heated massage table.

Your Ashiatsu therapist will use a set of bars, attached to the ceiling, to support and balance themselves, while delivering the massage with their feet.

During an Ashiatsu session, guests report an amazing, luxurious broad, deep pressure that is not achievable from other types of massage like Deep Tissue.

Unlike the pointed pressure of Trigger Point Therapy, Ashiatsu is deep and smooth, deeply relaxing and therapeutic, rather than uncomfortable or painful.

There are some common concerns that guests have when receiving Ashiatsu for the first time: will the therapist lose their balance and fall on me? is the therapist going to stand and/or walk on me?

A trained Ashiatsu therapist has experience in delivering Ashiatsu safely and effectively. An Ashiatsu therapist does not stand or walk on you. She delivers pressure with her feet. As a specially trained practitioner, your therapist is comfortable delivering Ashiatsu massage and is comfortable with the bars. Rest assured, your therapist will not fall off the table or onto you.

Is Ashiatsu right for me? Well, do you like deep tissue massage? IF the answer is yes, Ashiatsu may be the perfect fit.

Discover why guests who try Ashiatsu never go back to deep tissue massage again!
